IU’s New Drama Perfect Crown: Episode Reviews Coming to Kimbap and K-Dramas!

Running a website is hard. I knew that, but was still knocked on my behind. After a much needed hiatus, I’m back and super excited to review something a little lighter than Dear X.

The lighter drama in question is Perfect Crown, and it stars K-pop’s Princess and cultural icon IU, and Byeon Woo Seok of Lovely Runner fame. Perfect Crown will air on Disney+ on April 10th, and is set in an alternative version of Korea where monarchies still exist. Move over William and Kate!

IU plays the beautiful and brainy illegitimate daughter of a chaebol family named Sung Hee Joo, and Byeon Woo Seok plays Prince Yi An, a second prince with clipped wings. Hee Joo, hoping to secure her social standing, approaches Prince Yi An for marriage.

I’ve been looking forward to this drama for a long time! The set up of a modern-day prince marrying a commoner reminds me of Goong aka Princess Hours (IYKYK), but Hee Joo being rich and assertive herself subverts the Cinderella trope in an exciting way. Several summaries have also revealed that Prince Yi An is powerless because he’s the second son, so the relationship dynamic between him and Hee Joo should be interesting. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, IU’s last string of dramas have featured some brave, intelligent female leads, so I have high hopes for Sung Hee Joo as a character. I think we might even get a little role reversal with a Prince in Peril instead of a Damsel in Distress.

In addition to the interesting plot, I’m dying to rest my eyes on this drama because IU picks good projects, and this script in particular won Korean network MBC’s script contest. It’ll also be Byeon Woo Seok’s first drama since Lovely Runner, so there’s a lot of anticipation.

On April 10th, join me for “Three Yeses and a No”. It’s my unique drama review process where I pinpoint and discuss three things I like about a drama, and one thing I think needs improvement. Sometimes a “no” can even be something a character did that upset me. If you’d like a glimpse of this format, check out my reviews for Dear X. Then polish your crowns, get the mice in your attic to sew you a gown, and I’ll see you on April 10th for Perfect Crown!
