REVIEW: DEAR X EPISODE 10

Curiosity killed the cat…and Blue Beard’s last wife

Is it just me or is Moon Do Hyuk Blue Beard? If you don’t know who that is, Blue Beard is a character from a famous folktale. He’s a wealthy man who marries several women, and murders them. He gives his latest wife a magic key and tells her not to enter a specific room, but she does and discovers the corpses of his past wives. Right now it feels like Ah Jin is the last wife and Do Hyuk’s forbidden study is the room where the figurative bodies (aka his secrets) are being hidden.

This episode made me nervous for Ah Jin. She’s bitten off more than she can chew, and I don’t see a way out.

YES to Jun Seo and Jae Oh not being blown up

It turns out that before the explosion, Jae Oh threw a chair through his office’s window. Him and Jun Seo were able to jump out and get to safety. See, this is why Jae Oh is able to do what he does for Ah Jin. He’s resourceful, and he’s a quick thinker. I’m so glad him and Jun Seo are still with us!

Ah Jin doesn’t know the boys were in danger the entire episode and goes on to marry Do Hyuk. She stops communicating with Jun Seo and Jae Oh, and they spend their time trying to move on and find purpose in their lives.

YES to Jun Seo’s mom not getting anything in his grandfather’s will

Unfortunately, Jun Seo is having a harder time moving on and trying to be happy. He gave his mom a kidney in the last episode (I still don’t understand why…) and now his grandfather dies. To no one’s surprise, Hwang Ji Seon comes waltzing into the funeral and goes berserk when the family lawyer tells her she’s getting nothing. During her tantrum, she shouts that Jun Seo isn’t actually related to this grandfather and later reveals Ah Jin knew the entire time.

There it is. I was waiting for this to come to light. I thought it’d be revealed when Jun Seo’s grandfather was still alive, but that would’ve been more heartbreaking. Maybe it’s better this way. Poor Jun Seo. He obviously doesn’t take it well, and when he confronts Ah Jin about knowing she says she hid the truth for his own good. She says if she would’ve told him about his real father, he wouldn’t have grown up rich and privileged. That’s actually true. The only good adult in Jun Seo’s life was his grandfather. Without him or the safety net of money, Jun Seo would’ve had a similar life to Ah Jin and Jae Oh. Complete with the abusive parent because Hwang Ji Seon is definitely abusive.

This doesn’t mean I agree with Ah Jin hiding the truth. She should’ve told Jun Seo, and let him decide if he wanted to keep it a secret or tell his grandfather.

YES to Shim Sung Hee breaking into Ah Jin’s new home and giving us that ending

Shim Sung Hee must have quit her job at the shoe store. That’s the only way she’d have time to practically move into Ah Jin’s apartment to use her card to order copious amounts of food and taunt her. When Ah Jin marries Do Hyuk, I thought she’d finally give up and try to live her life like Re Na. But nope. Sung Hee dresses up like one of the housekeepers at Do Hyuk’s mansion, finds Ah Jin by the pool, and tries to stab her! A desperate struggle ensues, and Sung Hee ends up slashing her own face.

Oh, the irony! This is why you shouldn’t try to harm others. The pain you’re trying to inflict upon them might bounce back to you. Now Sung Hee’s going to have a giant scar across her face, and I doubt she has money for corrective plastic surgery. To this day, she blames Ah Jin for destroying her life when she’s the one who came after Ah Jin out of jealousy. And her dad is the one who was having an affair with her teacher. There’s no accountability, and Sung Hee has always directed her anger at the wrong place. Of course, the same can be said about Ah Jin. I view them as two sides on the same coin. Sung Hee got what was coming to her, and I think Ah Jin will too.

NO to Moon Do Hyuk aka Blue Beard

This episode heavily hints at the fact that Do Hyuk doesn’t have good intentions when it comes to Ah Jin. He has a forbidden study, he tells Ah Jin his ex-wife is in a psyche ward, and he’s got a listening device in her car, so he hears her ask Jae Oh to look into him. I also suspect Do Hyuk is instructing the head housekeeper to spike Ah Jin’s tea, thus giving her nightmares and insomnia. He’s trying to drive her crazy (crazier?) and get her admitted like his ex-wife. But what’s his motive? Did Ah Jin inadvertently hurt someone he cared about in the past? Was he somehow there the night her mom was murdered? I’m both nervous and intrigued.

I’m annoyed with Ah Jin as well. Why would she ask Jae Oh to look into what kind of person Do Hyuk is after marrying him?

Final Thoughts

I’m so scared about what Jae Oh is going to dig up on Do Hyuk—if he can even find anything. Do Hyuk was listening to the entire conversation, so he’s going to guard against Jae Oh’s investigative methods. I really hope Do Hyuk doesn’t try to kill him again.

Also, it looks like Jun Seo is moving back in with his mom after everything. Why? I know Ah Jin drove a wedge between them, but that doesn’t change the fact that Hwang Ji Seon is a terrible person. I doubt she’d care about maintaining a relationship with Jun Seo if he didn’t have access to money. He needs to get away from Ah Jin and his mother.

With only two episodes left, I’m wondering how Dear X will end and what its final message will be.
