REVIEW: DEAR X EPISODE 9

Episode nine is basically us watching Baek Ah Jin trade one cage for another…again. Seo Mi Ri of Longstar Entertainment is trying to get Ah Jin blackballed from the industry, but quickly finds herself in jail for embezzlement thanks to Ah Jin’s new admirer. If I thought Moon Do Hyuk didn’t seem mentally sound before, he pretty much proves it when he proposes to Ah Jin and targets Jun Seo and Jae Oh.

Moon Do Hyuk is definitely going to be the biggest hurdle in Ah Jin and the gang’s lives—the final boss, so to speak.

YES to Moon Do Hyuk getting DO Entertainment to sign Ah Jin?

It’s a question mark because I’m pretty sure this is a bad thing. I know Ah Jin doesn’t really have the choice to stay with Longstar Entertainment, but I wish she would’ve tried to do more research before signing with DO Entertainment. She could’ve had Jae Oh look into them and Do Hyuk, and once he let her know he couldn’t find much information, that would’ve been a sign something shady was going on. But instead Ah Jin was impulsive and signed with them. I understand her urgency, but still.

YES to Do Hyuk and Ah Jin’s first meeting

It was interesting to finally see them come face-to-face, but Moon Do Hyuk’s reason for being interested in Ah Jin was suspicious. He’s been watching her struggle for a while? Um…how long, sir? He wonders what she would’ve been like if she’d grown up in a normal family? Um…how does he know she’s not normal? I predicted in my last review that when he almost hit her with his car, he realized she was a sociopath and saw himself in her. But why hint at it during their first meeting, and how did she not pick up on that?

NO to Do Hyuk trying to blow Jun Seo and Jae Oh up!!

I knew he was bad news! Not only has he been tailing Ah Jin for who knows how long, but he put a tail on Jae Oh in this episode. And planted a listening device under a table at his job. Toward the end of the episode, Jae Oh invites Jun Seo over to his office to discuss the people tailing Ah Jin and one of Do Hyuk’s men quietly pours gasoline under the door, then throws a lighter on it! We’re left on a cliffhanger of Jae Oh’s office exploding with the two men inside.

I swear if anything happens to Jun Seo or Jae Oh—especially because of Do Hyuk, I will riot! Do Hyuk is swooping in like a knight in shining armor, but him ordering his men to take out Jae Oh (and unintentionally Jun Seo) shows me he’s trying to get rid of her current support system so she only has him to rely on. That’s always a very telling move.

Final Thoughts

Do Hyuk really gives me the creeps. I knew he wasn’t helping Ah Jin because of a crush or anything like that, but I want to know what he means by not being able to ignore people who had it rough like her. What does he care? Also, Ah Jin probably isn’t the only pretty girl in Korea who’s had a rough childhood. She probably isn’t even the only pretty sociopath. Does he plan to propose marriage to all of them and help with their careers? I’m going to need a clearer motive from the screenwriters.

Finally, if you’re wondering why there’s no third “Yes”, it’s because I didn’t feel like there was one. This whole episode was ominous and set up some very concerning things.
